‘If music be the food of love…’ then why have you not booked your seat for one of The Bard’s most well-known plays, the comedic ‘Twelfth Night‘, now showing at Maynardville Open-Air Theatre?
With a uniquely Afrocentric slant, the production is a brilliant take on the classic Shakespearian comedy of shipwrecked twins, Viola and Sebastian. Each believing the other to be dead, they stir up mayhem amongst the locals of Illyria, an imagined island off the coast of Africa – with comedic results.
Featuring the likes of David Johnson and Elizabeth Akudugu, with direction by Geoffrey Hyland and an original score by Neo Muyanga, ‘Twelfth Night’ explores the themes of illusion, psychosis and deception and how these affect our views of love and friendship.
Come for the cast’s skill and energy but stay for the laugh-a-minute pranks, beautiful setting and wonderful music. Our best bit? The puritanical Malvolio’s soliloquy, expertly delivered by Mark Elderkin.
