When we hear the words ‘Test Kitchen’ and ‘Luke Dale-Roberts’ in the same sentence, we tend to think of upscale fine-dining affairs – costly but the jury out there says worth every penny. Now, this talented chef and restaurateur is taking his creative genius to Langa for two pop-up charity events on 27 and 28 May.
The cost? A meagre R250 per person, which includes a four-course lunch menu with wines and ciders sourced from local estates. An authentic Test Kitchen experience for a fraction of the cost! The two pop-up events will be taking place at the Guga S’Thebe Cultural Arts and Cultural Centre in Langa, Cape Town’s oldest township.
But the real driving force behind these exciting events that will provide township locals to experience fine dining is a man named Wanda Guma. Born in Langa but raised in the United States, Guma is experienced in business development and strategic marketing, and after hearing Dale-Roberts speak at last year’s Business of Design Conference, the rest is history.
‘He [Luke] was really excited about the idea of being involved in a township project of some kind,’ says Guma. ‘We set up a brainstorming meeting with him and his team and in the end, came up with the idea of doing two very affordable charity lunches.’
Dubbed The Test Kitchen x The Langa Project, proceeds from the experiences will be distributed to two local notable organisations: the Noluthando Early Childhood Development Centre and Project Archangel, which raises funds and support for St. Michael’s Home for Abused Teenage Girls in Plumstead.
