The corner of Wale and Adderley Street lies one of Cape Town’s most iconic bars. With it’s central location, The Twankey Bar has long been a great meeting spot for people exploring the city streets. Now they have reinvented themselves and are ready for their next chapter.
Imagine a time when alcohol was outlawed. During Prohibition in the US, sipping on cocktails were a luxury people had to get creative to make a drink. While that is no longer the case, The Twankey Bar is strongly influenced by era and the creativity attached to it. The interior lends itself well to this. Walking into the bar it like stepping into the 1800s. Everything from the furniture to the fittings in the epitome of old school class. Think, dark heavy mahogany and leather, marble counter and wooden floors. This is all emphasised when you realise the bar is associated with the luxurious five-star Taj Hotel.
The real change at The Twankey Bar is their impressive range of incredible cocktails. Cape Town Mixologist, AJ Snetler. Winner of many mixology awards he is the custodian of the crafted cocktail menu. Using intriguing cocktail-making methods from wood-chip smoking and blazing to teapot brewing, each cocktail has it’s own story attached it. What sets them apart is the fact that every ingredient is made fresh on the premises: every infusion, syrup and garnish is made from scratch.
To compliment the cocktails, you can order delicious tapas that are inspired by the deep traditions of the Spice Route. There are refined versions of Indian street food, spiced lamb and blue cheese croquettes, poppers and fish and chip sliders.
The creative reinvention of The Twanky Bar has taken it to a different, (if possible) cooler place. Whether its for after work drinks or a fun night out, The Twanky Bar is a great choice for locals and tourists alike.
