It’s meteoric rise in recent times as the champion of breakfast is warranted – Eggs Benedict is a glorious way to start the day. The union of poached eggs and hollandaise with ham (alternatively salmon, bacon, spinach or even crayfish as you’ll see later) on top of a toasted muffin or scone is definitely something to look forward to in the morning.

Lovers of the liquid gold, hollandaise hounds and poached egg partisans – here is where to find the best eggs benny in Cape Town.

KLEINSKY’S DELICATESSEN

Salmon latke benedict from Kleinsky’s.

A slightly different take on the traditional eggs benedict blasts New York-style deli Kleinsky’s to the top of this list. Latke, (potato pancakes) is used as a base instead of a muffin and once you’ve tried this variation, it’s hard to ever go back. You have been warned.

The translated word for heaven is not in the title for nothing, Hemelhuijs does a superb eggs benedict, complete with artichoke, in that same signature style you would expect from one of the best eateries in the city.

This charming spot in Wynberg is famed for all of its breakfast offerings, but a standout performer for me is their eggs benedict, or eggs belicious as it is known there.

This all-day brasserie and pantry in the CBD. For a twist, try the eggs benedict with free range pork neck. If you have enough space after that, try Dear Me’s Turkish Eggs – poached eggs, yoghurt and chilli aoili on ciabatta. Not strictly eggs benny, but deserving of a mention.

Two words: crayfish benedict. The Deckhouse is the only place in Cape Town (that I know of) to offer this epic seafood spin on a classic, other than salmon.
