Nestled on the cliffs on the Knysna side of the Robberg Peninsula is Plettenberg Park, a five-star retreat which offers unparalleled views of the Garden Route coastline.

The unspoilt location is one of the biggest drawing cards for this Plettenberg Bay hotel. It is here where you won’t find cell phone reception, but rather star-filled nights completely devoid of light pollution, waves crashing below your terrace and the comfort of a luxury hotel and spa. Both Nelson Mandela and Richard Branson have chosen to stay here in the past, and after my recent overnight stay I could understand why.

Upon arrival, we were presented with a roaring fireplace, a glass of port and dessert each to share in our suite, actually perfect for the cold winter weather during our stay. These were, but a few of the small touches we really enjoyed – the staff at the hotel were pleasant, courteous but most importantly, efficient.

An aspect which I really enjoyed was the art. It’s not often that I would find myself taking much longer than usual to walk through a hotel passage to appreciate art, but it was here where I stopped by at each piece to admire the series of works by photographer and artist Clinton Friedman. Another aspect I enjoyed was the architecture – from the gravity-defying, sea-facing suites on the cliff to the very modern and contemporary design throughout.

Dining at Plettenberg Park is a treat. A full buffet breakfast can be savoured while overlooking the Indian ocean and dinner is more of a fine-dining type affair, complete with a cosy fireplace. Or if you’d prefer, room service can be arranged for a quiet, romantic night in. A wicked Karoo lamb dish and caught-that-day linefish are some of the delights offered at the restaurant.

During our stay, we didn’t have time to visit the spa. But by the moment we left, we felt rejuvenated and ready to take on the next Garden Route adventure.
