Visitors and residents of Cape Town will soon be able to enjoy free WiFi connectivity while riding on the MyCiti bus service.

In July this year, Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille tweeted that the tender process to get WiFi hotspots into the popular public bus service had begun, and we’ve just heard that the appointment of the WiFi service provider is imminent. This is according to the City of Cape Town’s Chief Information Officer, André Stelzner, who spoke to Fin24 earlier this week.

Stelzner says providing free WiFi on the MyCiti bus service is an expensive and challenging process, so it will only be rolled out along busy routes at first – the Table View to Cape Town route being the most likely candidate. He adds that 120 WiFi hotspots will be set up at transport interchanges and municipal buildings before the end of the year, expanding by 170 soon thereafter.

The WiFi rollout forms part of the city’s R1.2-billion plan to boost broadband internet access around the city, with R543-million pegged in the current financial year for upgrading Cape Town’s fibre infrastructure.
