After stocking up on candles, learning to cook without stoves and mastering our time around power cuts, we have definitely learnt how to live with load shedding. Luckily, for the past few months, there have been no power cuts and we enjoyed a load shedding free summer.

Load Shedding

While this has been absolutely awesome (I would not have survived this summer without air conditioning), I could not help but wonder how long this would last.  The good news is, it will last for quite a while.

According to Fin24, Eskom CEO Brian Molefe has said that they expect no more load shedding for summer, autumn and going into winter.  Molefe also said that Eskom has stabilised, and the need to carry on unplanned maintenance has decreased and that repairs have been completed without the need to cut power.

EWN reports that  there will still be planned maintenance and that Eskom will use independent power producers and gas turbines to avoid load shedding. Check out this blog post we did last year showing a time-lapse of load shedding happening in the CBD. It’s good to know that all those power cuts did actually help. While it would be good to have not had a load shedding period, months of uninterrupted power sounds pretty good to me!
