Swap out your normal nightlife antics for a couple of hours of comedy at the Baxter Theatre.

The Jive Cape Town Funny Festival has been running for 11 years now. Every year, festival director Eddy Cassar delivers a hysterical cast as he personally picks the entertainers who will take the stage for a month.

The funny line-up is made up of local, international and up-and-coming comedians as well as speciality acts. The speciality acts, all from the UK, mixes up the laughs with performances such as Bruce Airhead who uses a 2-metre balloon to entertain audiences as well as the Raymond and Mr Timpkins who commanded my attention throughout their clever, musical act. Earl Okin performed at the first funny festival and returned this year to seduce the ladies. I most certainly succumbed to the charming Earl’s spell especially falling for his acapella trumpet skills.

Besides the hilarious performances and jokes, you can expect singing and dancing lead by the MC Alistair Izobell otherwise known as Mr Cape Town. Plus, be prepared for a little audience participation with Mike Raffone (side note: it’s better if you’re just a good sport).

As always, the festival features a comedian who is breaking onto the scene. This year the spot went to Dylan Skews who is rather talented in the accents department. I found myself in stitches with the women stand-ups. Shimmy Issacs had everyone laughing at her stories about her family who lives in Worcester and showed off her skills of identifying different kind of drunks. While, headlining comedian Tumi Morake found the lighter side to topics of race in South Africa.

During the interval, head over to the Jive truck that’s stocked with cold drinks and boerie rolls.

In the last weeks, new acts will join the show like the I Baccala’ Clowns (3-16 August), Siv Ngesi (10-16 August) and Carl Weber (3-9 August).
