Kicking back on your couch is all well and good, but there’s nothing like the feeling of being surrounded by your fellow supporters as your boys take it over the try line. Here are five places you want to be during the next big game.
Established in 1852, the Foresters Arms claims to be South Africa’s oldest pub, with a Guinness World Record to its name for selling the most beer in the southern hemisphere to date. But there’s nothing historical about the big-screens dotted around the cosy interior, so you can catch every second of the game. Bonus points: it’s conveniently close to the stadium, so your mates who scored tickets to a home game can meet you after for a celebratory or consolatory cold one.

This Constantia institution is always buzzing, and even more so when the game is on, so grab a table early and settle in for a session of day-drinking. Gourmet burgers and snack baskets are the order of the day, or fuel up on a proper eisbein before supporting our boys.

Another golden oldie, Fireman’s was established in 1864, so they know a thing or two about pulling a decent pint and filling stomachs, pre-match. No fewer than nine 46″ TVs will be showing the game on Saturday, with another two extra-large screens so you can second-guess every last call by the ref.

This low-key Fringe district joint is known for its excellent steaks and being the kind of small, cosy bar where everybody knows your name. Which was probably how it began, back in the 1800s when Cecil John Rhodes frequented it. Come early, snag a table with a good view of the TV and order a Persies steak and chips. You won’t be disappointed.

Another firm local favourite, this historical two-storey V&A pub has 14 screens, meaning there’s no need to worry about some tall oke blocking your view. Six exclusive beers from the Mitchell’s brewery in Knysna should keep your thirst at bay too.
