Do you have the general knowledge (and alcohol tolerance) to claim the title of pub quiz champion?

Entering a team into a local pub quiz is fantastic entertainment and a great winter night out for you and your smarty-pants friends.

Typically, a pub quiz will involve multiple rounds with different themes, such as history, geography, art/literature, music, sport, current affairs and science/nature. Often, your team can pick a category to double up your points, so make sure you pick one you’re confident in.

Come prepared with a winning team name, ideally combining a pun on the word “quiz” with a little smutty humour. Quiz in my Pants or Let’s Get Quizzical are both acceptable.

And remember to put your phone away during the rounds – Google can’t save you now!

Fireman’s Arms

This establishment is one of the oldest watering holes in Cape Town, and it hosts a top-notch Thursday quiz night. The flatscreen TVs surrounding the bar area are usually reserved for playing sports, but on Thursday nights they display the questions that will separate the bigmouths from the wise guys.

The quiz starts at 7.30pm every Thursda and costs R20 per person. The winning team gets half their supper bill covered, and the team in second place gets a round of drinks on the house. Details and updates on their Facebook page.

Knead

Knead Bakery hosts regular quiz nights at their Sea Point and Palmyra Junction branches. These quiz nights are more family-orientated than your usual pub quiz, and there are often children who come along and get involved too. The prizes are Knead meal vouchers. The quizzes are run by Quiz Nights SA, and they occasionally have themed nights such as Harry Potter or Game of Thrones trivia. The best place to keep updated about upcoming quiz nights is by following the page below on Facebook.

Jack Black Brewery

The Jack Black Brewery Taproom is the kind of hidden gem that you’ll never stumble across by accident – you have to go looking for it. But once you’ve found it, you’ll definitely be back for more. It’s a stunning converted warehouse in the industrial area of Diep River, with the open plan seating area mingling with the giant vats of fermenting craft beer. Quiz nights happen every second Thursday, and R50 gets you entrance and a beer of your choice. Teams bigger than 6 people can play for fun but aren’t eligible for a prize. The quiz includes spot prizes of cases of beer, and a R300 bar tab for the winners. Booking recommended, and you can do it online here.

The Forex Bar

Get whiskied, wined and world-wise on Tuesday nights at The Forex Bar in Observatory. Entrance into the quiz is free, and there are shooters, hampers and bar tabs up for grabs.
