The Book Lounge, CBD

The Centre of Language at UCT is holding a special event to honour the launch of a trilingual Nǀuu-Afrikaans-English reader. Nǀuu is one of the more than 100 distinct non-Bantu click languages which were spoken by hunter-gatherers before the arrival of Khoekhoe pastoralists and various Bantu-speaking peoples.

Nluu has been taught by Katrina Esau, aka Ouma Geelmeid in an effort to keep the endangered language alive. Ouma Geelmeid is the youngest of the three remaining speakers of Nǀuu. The reader has been produced in collaboration with ǂKhomani community members and is now being used in the Nǀuu language classes conducted by Ouma Geelmeid.

The reader is not available for sale, but can be freely downloaded on OpenUCT.
