Fruit recently won the award for best production of the year at the 2015 Zabalaza Festival.

Written and directed by the acclaimed Paul Noko, the multi-layered play follows the life story of Matlakala – a young woman growing up in the crime-ridden and poverty-stricken Diepkloof.

The story is told through the indigenous game Masikitla – in which our protagonist uses a collection of stones to represent the 16 characters who influenced her childhood.

At the age of 14, she receives a doll she names Lucy, the recipient of her many, childhood tales. It is through this reminiscing that she learns to reclaim her lost innocence and broken childhood.

Having beaten over 40 other productions, Fruit is ‘technically proficient, well conceptualised and beautifully written’ and certainly has relevance in the lives of many South Africans.
