Since I first saw The Grand Daddy featured on Top Billing many years ago, I knew this was a place I had to experience for myself, and now that I have, I can clearly see why it has made an appearance on popular TV shows such as “My Super Sweet World Class” and the Expresso Show.

Being the only hotel in South Africa with themed vintage airstream trailers on the rooftop, as well as the oldest working elevator in Cape Town, there is a good mix of old-school class with modern edginess.

Pink Flamingo

We started our evening off at the Pink Flamingo Cinema, and got cosy on the couch with our picnic basket from the hotel which included various delicious cheeses, as well as an assortment of salads, wraps and tasty dip. But let me not forget their brownies – you have not had a good brownie until you have tried theirs!

The rain falling around us added to the warm and comfortable ambiance as we sipped our Amarula-infused hot chocolate and munched on the complimentary popcorn and sweets while enjoying the movie.

The rooms are beautifully designed with a South African touch of style. Overlooking Long Street, with the inclusion of The Daddy Cool Bar and Sky Bar, it is impossible to get bored while staying here. If you wish to make your stay that much better, I suggest staying in one of the creatively themed trailers – you may pick one to suit your personality; such as the Winelands Trailer if you’re a wine fanatic, or, if you’re more of a beach babe, you can stay in the Beach House. But if you have a thrill for the wild, you can get in touch with nature in the Safari Trailer. Each trailer is decorated immaculately, with so much attention to detail that you really feel like you are a part of whatever the trailer is decorated as.

There is also a fantastic Mediterranean-style restaurant downstairs called L’Apero which boasts an impressive menu; here you may also order those world class brownies I’m so obsessed with. The buffet breakfasts are also quite something to treat yourself to, whether staying at the hotel, or just in town looking for a good quality bite to eat.

You can also hire out the rooftop for most special occasions such as birthdays, work functions and even weddings. It’s a fantastic venue if you are really looking for a memorable place that is both quirky and classy!

Join on Monday nights at The Pink Flamingo Cinema, for a great classic movie – R100 gets you a welcome drink as well as popcorn and sweets. Visit the Sky Bar from Wed – Sat from 4pm to 8.30pm for some great after work sundowners.
