The story of a young man who hijacked a woman, only to discover a three-month-old baby in the back seat, will always capture the hearts of South Africans. Tsotsi won the 2006 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and was nominated for the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film in 2006. The good news is that next year, the critically acclaimed movie Tsotsi, will be hitting the theater as a musical. Cape Town Opera, in association with the Artscape theater, will be hosting the gripping drama as a musical.

In 2015, Cape Town Opera was awarded the rights to produce Tsotsi, The Musical, a kwaito-music stage production based on Athol Fugard’s novel about a South African gangster’s life, which gained huge international attention after the release of the film back in 2005.

The  production will bring together some of South Africa’s most loved creatives and will tackle some of the country’s most pressing social issues. It is expected to present a moving image of a young man alienated from his family and the promises of success in new-democratic South Africa. After a life of gangerism it all changes in a instant which leads to redemption and demise.

The music is composed and directed by multi-award winning singer, songwriter, producer and composer, Zwai Bala – a member of kwaito group TKZee. Book and lyrics by Mkhululi Mabija, Tsotsi, the Musical is directed by award winners Neil Coppen and Khayelihle Dominique Gumede.

Hip hop artist Mxolisi ‘Zuluboy’ Majozi stars as  Tsotsi, with supporting cast members, Msizi Njapha, Busisiwe Ngejane, Bianca Le Grange, Kgomotso Matsunyane, Katlego Letsholonyana, Thembisile Ntaka, Royston Stoffels and Lindani Nkosi.

The show is expected to start next year February and tickets are available on computicket.
