‘A lot of people are getting away with traffic violations because the cases don’t get to court.’

News doing the rounds this morning is that severe traffic offences are going largely unpunished due to magistrates being unable to cope with the number of cases on the court roll.

These severe traffic offences are defined as 30 km/h over the limit and, as it stands, there is a very small chance that offenders will be held accountable in court due to the logistical nightmare.

Despite the city having allocated an additional three magistrates to deal with traffic offences, they’re ‘not even touching sides’ according to Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security JP Smith. Smith also pointed out that it is pointless to add more traffic officers as the current admin bottleneck needs to be resolved first.

It goes without saying that motorists are encouraged to be diligent when it comes to paying their fines, even if it is now public knowledge that the courts are struggling.
