South African brandy is being steadily steered away from its Coke-related stereotypes. It may still be some way from being distilled in a Woodstock loft by a trendy, bearded gentleman, but the Urban Brandy Cocktail Route by BrandySA is changing the liquid gold game with its exciting range of reimagined cocktails offered at selected outlets.

Camps Bay’s The Bay Hotel is one of those outlets, and last week I had the good fortune of visiting (with the help of Rikki’s Taxis) to experience what the Urban Brandy Cocktail Route is all about.

Take a moment to appreciate how amazing the Bay Hotel is.

Launched in Cape Town in March 2013, the route is an experience-based initiative created to meet the increasing demand for South Africa’s popular spirit. Classic cocktails are given new life, with hand-crafted creations like the Boijito (pictured below) and Kingna Mary (a wonderful take on the Bloody Mary) encouraging a younger demographic to start pairing it with more than a two-litre bottle of Coke.
