Kick back with a cold one as 3 August marks International Beer Day and the Cape has a range of places to taste a well crafted brew.

Starting in August 2008, International Beer Day is celebrated in over 200 cities and is the perfect excuse to hang out with friends over a beer.

Cape Town is known for its variety and quality craft beer, unique to the province.

1.Beerhouse 

A well known favorite in the city, Beerhouse has 25 beers on tap and 99 bottles of beer to choose from. The bar and restaurant offers a craft beer tasting tray, there are four package options to choose from, costing R85 to R170.

Each tray is dedicated to a specific flavor such as the Explorer, consisting of Jack Black Lager, Lakeside festival lager, Apollo blonde, CBC Amber Weiss, Drifter Coconut ale and Lifemans Yell’oh.

2. Riot Beer 

Home to a barrel aged Beer, Riot Beer ages beer in five year old barrels for up to seven months. The aged beer is only available in Riot stores and selected bars.

Their vintage option is amber ale that is aged for 6 months in the barrels and has a delightful toffee like flavor ending with a port taste.

3. Devils Peak Salk River Taproom 

Devils Peak Taproom, located in the bustling Woodstock area is home to a range of unique and limited edition barrel beers.

Creators of the popular Devil’s Peak larger and the award winning King’s Blockhouse IPA beer – the taproom is a must-visit spot for beer lovers.

4. Aegir Project Brewery 

Located on the sunny shores of Noordhoek, the Aegir project brewery produces five ales year round . The brewery is independent and offers a food pairing with their selected beers on offer.

5. Woodstock Brewery 

The brewery is known for the creation of its unique and ‘out of this world’ flavors such as the recent (India Pale Ale) IPA fruit loops flavor.

The company was founded by a local entrepreneur who wanted to explore the market of craft beer in South Africa. The brewery has a restaurant on the premises that offers the perfect steak to pair with a cold one.

6. Urban Brewing Co. 

The Urban Brewing Co is situated in Hout Bay and focuses on traditional brewing methods but is not afraid to prepare brews that are out of the box.

All beers are made using Hout Bay spring water and there are four beers on tap, from Weiss, a Blonde ale, Pilsener and a stout. Visitors are able to arrange a tour of the brewery and take a look at the  beer making process.

The Monkey’s Paw Pilsner, a craft beer, is one of the award winning crafts that Urban Brewing Co is well known for.

7.  The Brewers Co-op

The brewery consist of 14 talented brewers each with their own tap at the bar – there is frequently a new batch at the brewery.

8. Darling Brewery 

The niche brewery is located just over an hours drive out of Cape Town is well worth the trip – its welcoming beer garden is the perfect setting to sip on a craft beer in the sun.

A taste room located on the premises ensures that visitors can experience the variety in beer flavors. The restaurant serves light meals that are made from organic and locally produced goods.

9. Cape Brewing Company 

Known as CBC, the brewery is a local favorite that uses the finest ingredients from the Paarl mountain. Although the brewery is located a short drive out of Cape Town, the beer is crafted by award winning brewmaster, Wolfgang Koedel.

A tasting is offered to experience all the brewery has to offer, from the raspberry Krystal Weiss to the classic Pale ale.

10. Italian job Brewery 

A small microbrewery located just outside of Stellies packs a punch with its ties to Italy flavors and the range of ‘the big five’ which showcases an original set of flavors.
