A major rehabilitation project will be underway this winter at the Adderley and Strand intersection in the city centre.
R24 million will be spent upgrading the road surface and base above the two streets, which haven’t been upgraded in more than 30 years. Lane closures have been in effect since 9 April and will continue until August 2015, provided there are no delays.
The existing asphalt surface is cracked, which has been causing water to leak on to pedestrian and retail space. Although not an upgrade that will be very noticeable to motorists, the upgrade will be a relief for retailers who use the space. Parking and entrances to the parking garages will not be affected by the construction.
During the upgrade pedestrians are advised to make use of the pedestrian crossings further along Adderley and Strand Streets as there are no pedestrian crossings at this intersection.
