Going green is not only trendy, it is vitally important for life on this planet. There have been many steps towards living a more eco-friendly life. Recycling has become a more common practice, we are tapping into solar energy more, and (hate it or love it) load shedding has taught us how to survive when the power goes out. The next big step in green living is a completely green, car-free village that is being built right here in the Cape.

According to Business Day, Swisatec, a Cape Town-based architectural and project management firm is working on building this village. R14 billion is going towards upgrading the popular Blue Rock Resort in Somerset West to make it a luxury, eco-friendly village. This is thought to be the first of its kind in Africa.
The village will surround the lake of Blue Rock, which according to the developments brochure, is one of the cleanest and clearest lakes in the Western Cape. There will be only one road serving the entire development that will lead cars through alleys, trees and a luxury parking facility. Everything within the village is pedestrian friendly.
The Blue Rock Village will have apartments, a lifestyle centre, hotel and conference centre, sports ground – basically everything you need. All the apartments will make use of energy efficient appliance, LED lighting and water management systems. Business Tech reports that even the building materials and methods used to create the village will be environmentally friendly.
It is estimated that the project will take around eight to ten years to complete, so you have time to get your affairs in order if you want to move to Blue Rock Village. While we wait for this awesome new development, let’s continue to live green lives. It does not take a whole new village to lead an eco-friendly lifestyle.
