Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille has gone public with her water consumption at her Pinelands residence – and has vowed to reduce her usage.

In a tweet yesterday, de Lille made it known that her consumption was above target and that she was closely monitoring how to adhere to the City of Cape Town’s daily target of 87l per day for her household of three people and four dogs.

The Mayor’s collective use in her home was 89l per person – a total of 267l per day for three people.

Following the tweet, De Lille was asked by a Twitter user why her water consumption was above the city’s target – to which she replied: “My family and I are working to reduce our water use further. I hope you are too.”

Users on both Twitter and Facebook expressed their support for the Mayor, with positive responses sent in light of her transparency.

But not everybody was impressed.
