Monopoly is one of those games that pretty much every family has tucked away in a cupboard somewhere. Growing up, my siblings and I would pull out the board during school holidays and spend an entire day trying to bankrupt one another.

My older brother always got the sports car, my younger brother got the shoe (don’t ask) and I somehow always got lumped with the thimble. I don’t even think it was the actual game thimble, but rather one of my mother’s disused and long-forgotten items. In spite of my apparent lack of ability to claim a ‘cool’ playing piece, I knew the key to success – be the banker.

Always be the banker.

I’m not saying I cheated; I’m just saying I was probably a little selective when it came to ‘bank errors in your favour’.

So Monopoly holds a firm spot in the memory banks of my childhood, and I know I’m not alone. That’s what makes today all the more special for me – it’s the official launch of Cape Town’s very own edition of the famous Monopoly board.

The launch of Cape Town Monopoly kicks off today at the Clock Tower Square in the V&A Waterfront at around 10:30 am. It’s there you’ll find a huge board (10m x 10m), and we’ve heard on good authority that there may be spot prizes on offer to spectators as well (not more thimbles I hope).

I love Monopoly; it’s definitely one of my go-to board games, and I can’t wait to get my hands on one of the new Cape Town-themed editions. If you can’t either, watch this space, because Cape Town Etc will next week give away three of the new boards to lucky winners. Details to follow!
