Following on from its astrological food series last year, where meals were prepared according to diners’ star signs, The Westin’s ON19 Restaurant is bringing its patrons another unique dining series in 2017 – 1ON19.
Each month, ON19’s Executive Chef Anerith Smythe will showcase a delectable five-course dinner focused on one hero ingredient and paired with wine displaying the diverse terroir, climate, cellaring and vinification of some of the Western Cape’s finest wine farms.
If you were lucky enough to attend the first event in January, your senses would have been delighted by the flavour combinations of strawberry and blush. From an amuse bouche of coconut biscuit with black garlic, strawberries and celeriac – paired with Pierre Jourdan Belle Rose – to the dessert of strawberries, parmesan and black pepper cream that went down well with Bon Courage Blush, each course was presented beautifully. Although Blush is technically not a cultivar, the array of diverse blush wines now on offer displays the wide appeal of the common and familiar pairing of the strawberry and blush duo.

Our favourite part of the meal? Definitely the Burrata laden with strawberry and tomato jam, and grilled zucchini – yum!
Feel like you’ve missed out? Don’t! The next two months offer combinations of Basil and Sauvignon Blanc for February and Chilli and Semillon for March.
In February, the menu will include culinary delights such as basil tagliatelle, zucchini and pine nuts for starters; mains of Confit rabbit, pine-infused (shallot) puree with hazelnut and basil vinaigrette; and basil sable with lime and white chocolate mousse, watermelon gel and basil powder for dessert.
March promises more of a kick with a chilli-infused menu that contains dishes as diverse as cured sesame mackerel with chilli caramel dressing; chilli-infused pomegranate sorbet; and dark chocolate mousse with jalapeno poppers and orange granita.
