Perdeberg Winery has come a long way since its humble beginnings and now produces a wide variety of award-winning wines.

The winery came about in the 1940s when farmer Jan Rossouw decided to start producing wine to counteract the low prices they were getting for their premium grapes.

The Cape Paardeberg Mountain got its name from the Cape mountain zebra and quagga that used to roam its slopes. You’ll find Perdeberg Winery at the foot of this mountain within one of the finest farming areas of the Cape.

Perdeberg has much respect for their land and put a lot of effort into conservation, so it’s fitting for the zebra to earn a place on the wine label. Merlot, the Perdeberg Zebra, is the mascot symbolising the estate’s rich heritage, love for the land, and uniqueness of their wines.

The magnificent vineyards cover more than 3,000 hectares of the Paarl and Swartland regions. This area benefits from four different macroclimates and a variety of soil types. This natural variation allows Perdeberg to produce an array of wines.

The quality of Perdeberg’s wines can be attributed to the vines that grow in stressful and dry conditions. A unique aspect of most of Perdeberg’s vineyards is that they are unirrigated dry lands and have no access to water other than what nature provides. In addition, 50% of the vines are not supported by trellis which earns them the name ‘bush vines’.

Regularly in survival mode, these bush vines produce their best fruit in order to sustain themselves. As a result, the characteristics of the smaller grapes epitomise the intense colours and flavours of the grape variety.
