A fantastic hunger-ending initiative is making it’s way to South Africa – and they need your help.

With an already successful strategy implemented in the UK, where surplus bread which would otherwise be thrown away, is turned into craft beer. The profits go towards Soil for Life, who help build sustainable food gardens.

The Toast Ale South African team, driven by entrepreneurs Biana Hansen and Jaen Beelders, already have the support of the likes of Knead Bakery, Hudson’s, Sandwich Baron, Yuppie Chef and League of Beers. Although the initiative has this support, they still need every day South Africans to help make this life changing ale a reality.

The Toast Ale team hopes to help reduce the amount of food waste in South Africa – a country where 13 million people go without regular meals.

Sandwich factories throw away the first slice of every loaf, and old bread usually gets throw away. That’s what Toast is hoping to change.

The business has partnered with local bakeries and commercial sandwich sandwich factories to take their extra bread and use it to replace one third of the malt in Toast Ale. An awesome tasting product is guaranteed, as they’ve partnered with Cape Town’s favourite taproom, Devil’s Peak Brewing Company.

The profits from the Toast Ale sales will go to non-profit organisation, Soil for Life, who’ll use it to train South Africa’s unemployed to grow their own food for their families and communities.

A contribution from you to their Thundafund Campaign can help raise the funds needed for their first two batches of ale into production.

R50 will get you a “high five” from the team, as well as entry into a lucky draw to win a six-pack of Toast Pale Ale. R100 will get you a thank you video, and a spot on the website’s wall of Toast Heroes.

Double that and R200 will get you a Toast Pale Ale six-pack, along with a handwritten thank you note. R200 will also offer you the option to alternatively receive two artisanal breads from Knead Bakery, perfect for pairing with two Toast Ales.

R50 more, (R250), gets you a ticket to one of two exclusive curated food and Toast beer pairing evenings hosted in Cape Town and Johannesburg. A R400 donation to the Thundafund Campaign will get you 12 Toast Pale Ales, along with two Toast beer glasses. R100 more (R500), and you’ll receive 18 Toast beers delivered to your door anywhere in South Africa, just in time for Christmas.

The rewards don’t stop there – see what other rewards you can earn, and donate on the Toast Ale Thundafund Campaign page.
