The Cape of Storms certainly lived up to its name this weekend, with a powerful combination of wind and rain hitting the Cape Peninsula seemingly out of nowhere on Sunday morning.

A couple in Sunningdale was lucky enough to have been staying with relatives after a high voltage electrical pylon collapsed onto their house. No one was injured, but the owner of the house, which the couple are currently renting, is going to have one hell of an insurance claim to submit. Here’s some images, but check out the full story and video on IOL.

The pylon smashed into a geyser in the house and destroyed some of the plumbing, so large portions were completely flooded by the time the couple returned home.

Eskom spokesperson Jolene Henn says it is believed lightning struck one of the cables attached to the tower, causing it to snap. She says the last time a high voltage tower collapsed in Cape Town was about six or seven years ago, adding that the Eskom officials have made contact with the owner and will assist with the insurance claims process.

Several roads across Cape Town were flooded and a woman died and 11 other people injured in Mitchell’s Plain when a vehicle collided with a taxi.

A tree also fell onto a car in Tamboerskloof, completely crushing it:

With farmers in the Western Cape pleading for more rain after a particularly dry rainy season, it seems Mother Nature is not without a sense of irony and clearly has different plans for our fair Cape of Storms.
