Come November, Cape Town will be the first city in South Africa to have its own Monopoly board game.

Regional versions of the game have been released for the past 15 years, but this is the first time a city in South Africa has been considered for inclusion – our city’s recent debut in the 80th anniversary of Monopoly helped our cause.

It has been revealed that ‘Community Chest’ and ‘Chance’ cards will be included in the game, but the public is encouraged to submit ideas about how these cards will function. Cape Town Tourism is pushing for our ‘big 7’ attractions to feature on the board: icons such as Table Mountain, the V&A Waterfront, Kirstenbosch and, you guessed it, Pollsmoor Prison.

I’m hoping that the ‘real’ Cape Town is portrayed in this version of Monopoly, and not just the tourist-friendly attractions. Places like the colourful Bo-Kaap, historic Stellenbosch, the oldest local township of Langa and Robben Island.

For the next three weeks, Capetonians can submit their votes to [email protected] about which local landmarks should be included in the new release of the game.
