The body of a 95-year-old woman from Hermanus was discovered in the bathroom of her security complex flat this weekend. It is reported that the elderly victim’s body was found bound.

A security guard, in the complex where the elderly victim lived, alerted police to the incident.

Speaking to EWN, South African Police Services spokesperson, Noloysiso Rwexana, said that the police are currently investigating a case of murder.

“Hermanus police are investigating a case of murder after the body of an elderly woman was found in her house just after 5 pm. According to the information, police were alerted by the security guard who found the victim,” she said.

On Monday, Police Minister, Bheki Cele, announced the results of the 2017/18 Crime Statistics. It was revealed that the Western Cape is the murder capital of South Africa.

An average of 57 people are murdered in the country per day and the police station with the highest murder incidences recorded is Nyanga Police Station.

The Western Cape reported 808 gang-related murders, 45 taxi-related murders and 173 mob justice-related murders – making it the most violent province in South Africa.
