Set on the magnificent Steenberg Estate, in the heart of the Southern Suburbs, you would be forgiven for thinking Catharina’s is just another estate restaurant.

An oasis just a few minutes from the city, you’ll be greeted by beautiful landscaped gardens and friendly staff. Sit outdoors if the weather is warm and watch the Egyptian geese strut around the lawns while the squirrels bound from tree to tree.

Although small with only two options each for starters, mains and desserts, the lunch specials menu caters to different palates with seafood, pasta and meat featuring.

Start off with a creamy dish of mushroom risotto or confit chicken Ceasar salad that could be meals in and of themselves if the large portion sizes are anything to go by. But do come hungry as these only pave the way for what’s to come.

For meat lovers, there’s a hefty 200g steak accompanied by hand cut chips, roasted butternut and creamed leek. The amazing scent emanating off your plate will tempt you to dig in straight away. For those more partial to seafood, try the seafood linguine, consisting of prawns, sea bass and mussels, which has a lovely sweet taste that’s beautifully balanced by a touch of feta.

Thought it was over? Think again as dessert consists of either a tasty Rooibos and milk tart creme brulee – possibly the most South African creme brulee you’ll ever find, and the most delicious too – or a selection of three seasonal sorbets that goes down a hoot on a hot summer’s day.

But don’t let your meal end there. Stick around to indulge in a glass of wine or two and mentally prepare yourself for a return to Catharina’s at Steenberg.

The Catharina’s lunch specials menu will be available until end November 2017.
