A fire broke out in Imizamo Yethu, Hout Bay, on Tuesday at approximately 1pm. Multiple structures were destroyed, and many families lot most of their belongings. Community members worked with the local fire department to douse the flames and prevent the fire from spreading further.

City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson, Theo Layne, said that one water tanker, four fire engines, one rescue vehicle and 24 firefighters were on the scene helping to put out the fire which took place in Chris Hani Road. According to Lane, three formal dwellings were destroyed, along with numerous informal structures.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage.
