The wind is howling, the rain is pouring and no matter how many layers you put on, it’s just not enough to fight off the cold. It’s the time of year we swap out cocktails for coffee, the beach for museums and when Table Mountain Cableway closes for annual maintenance.

Yes, you will not be able to go up the glorious mountain and survey the view like a god/goddess looking down at the mortals below (we all do that right?). But don’t worry, it’s just for two weeks. The Cableway will be closed from Monday 25 July  – Sunday 7 August.

During this shutdown period, the Top Station’s generator will be replaced, the 11kV electricity line will undergo maintenance, the rops will be cleaned and tested, the main gearbox, generators and backup generators will be serviced and much more. Basically the good folks at Table Mountain Cableway are ensuring that everything is in working order, that they meet the highest global standards set by the Swiss Governing Body and they continue to take you up and down the mountain safely.

One exciting change happening during the annual maintenance is a revamp of the Table Mountain Café menu. The menu will feature authentic South African cuisine so our international visitors can get a enjoy our awesome city with all their senses when they are up there.

The usual Cableway specials will still be on after the maintenance. This includes the Kidz Season Special, where two children under 18 get a free return ticket when accompanied by a paying adult, and the free birthday ticket. If your Birthday falls within the maintenance period (Monday 25 July  – Sunday 7 August) you can redeem your free ticket one week before or one week after the closure. Remember to have an ID as proof of your special day!
