I thought it was a given already, but now it’s official (by Telegraph standards). Table Mountain has been named as one of the most beautiful mountains in the world by Telegraph Travel.

The 1084 metre high mountain, once known as Hoerikwaggo, is one of Cape Town’s biggest tourist attractions and is undoubtedly the most iconic landmark in South Africa.

Table Mountain was the only African mountain to make the list, which I found surprising as Kilimanjaro is quite a sight to behold. Mount Fuji in Japan was another surprising omission. Having said that, joining our beloved rock in the list were:

  • Alpamayo, Peru
  • Mount Damavand, Iran
  • Stetind, Norway
  • Cerro Torre, Argentina/Chile
  • Licancabur, Chile/Bolivia
  • Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Italy
  • Kirkjufell, Iceland
  • Laila Peak, Pakistan
  • Mount Kailash, China
  • The Eiger, Switzerland
  • Mount Roraima, Venezuela/Brazil
  • Mount Machhapuchchhre, Nepal
  • El Capitan, USA
  • Benbulben, Ireland
  • Mount Fitz Roy, Chile/Argentina
  • Table Mountain, South Africa
  • Mount McKinley/Denali, USA
  • The Black Cuillin, Scotland
