Truck drivers passing through De Doorns on the N1 are being targeted by criminals, who have been stoning their vehicles, forcing drivers to come to a halt.
The assailants then take the opportunity to loot the truck. A number of drivers have suffered serious injuries from these attacks, and one attack resulted in a fatality.
The fatality occurred during the first of these incidents, which took place on Sunday. The driver was tragically killed after a rock was thrown through his windscreen while he was driving, causing him to lose control of his vehicle.
Cargo on board was then looted, including clothing.
Western Cape traffic chief Kenny Africa told EWN, “It seems to me they aim to have the drivers lose control so that they can loot the trucks. On Sunday morning they looted everything within 45 minutes.”
Since the first incident, two other trucks have been targeted in the same area.
