The three-storey Youngblood gallery saw the #REDexperiment design contest awards ceremony at First Thursdays on 1 June 2017.

This design competition was run by contemporary hotel brand Radisson RED and Youngblood Africa Foundation, which aimed to provide up-and-coming South African creatives the opportunity to join Cape Town’s hottest hotel’s design team. Three winners were chosen from over 100 entries and were each awarded R10 000 for their unique creations.

A night of champagne, entertainment and socialising allowed us to celebrate the three winners and their respective art works on the night. Micah Donnoli was named category winner for his creative beermat design. Riekus Raaths and Nkululeko Zulu took home the winning title with their innovative 250ml and 350ml takeaway coffee cup designs. The winning designs will be created into real beermat and coffee cup sleeves used in the hotel’s OUIBar + KTCHN restaurants when it launches in September 2017.

Youngblood Gallery will display all the #REDexperiment finalist designs throughout June. Other exhibiting artists featured at the gallery in June include Robyn Pretorius, Juanita Oosthuizen and David Griessel, all showcasing red inspired works. All these designs will be displayed at the hotel’s Grand Opening event in September this year.

The rest of the evening was filled with dance performances by the Figure of Eight dance group and had guests indulging in delicious canapés and bubbly. An art exhibition on the night of June’s First Thursday won’t easily be forgotten, and has us eagerly awaiting the opening of Africa’s first Radisson Red Hotel.
