Couture bridal gown designer Cindy Bam showcased a range of romantic, rustic dresses at the Wedding Expo this past weekend that truly caught our eye. Gowns that floated down the runway were flowy and feminine, while at the stand, we were met with delicate lace details and exquisite beaded numbers. This was just a glimmer into Cindy Bam’s aesthetic, yet we were in awe.

We were lucky to meet the talent behind the name, who gave us some insight into her brand and answered some personal questions about her creative inspirations.

The Cindy Bam team create luxury gowns that evoke the drama and glamour of past era’s, but still maintains a contemporary edge. While each gown is lovingly crafted and hand-made, Cindy prides her designs on their superior fit that are characterised by her ‘modern-vintage’ edge.

As to how she got into the realm of bespoke bridal couture? It was inevitable really. “I have been designing as long as I can remember”, she says. She explains how, at the age of 13, she wrote herself a letter detailing exactly what she wanted to be when she grew up and all that she wanted to achieve. On that list was to be a designer.

After studying in France, she returned to South Africa with minor finances and minimal experience. She ventured to Cape Town and it is here where she embarked on her journey as a designer. Ultimately, it was her own wedding in 2002 that sparked her to start her own label and specialise in bridal couture. This venture aligned with her passion for women empowerment – whether it be making them feel beautiful and confident through her clothes, or employing and training her staff, who have been with her since day one.

What motivated you to channel your design talent into couture bridal wear?
My biggest motivation was when I struggled to find the perfect gown for my own wedding, and how it inspired me to start my own label.

What inspires you, creatively?
My clients and lace and fabric inspires me to come up with a new design.

Describe your design style in 5 words
Timeless, modern-vintage, classical and feminine.

What era do you love to channel?
The current Blushing Bride collection is a mix of modern with bohemian style. It originated in the 1700’s out of necessity to live a minimalist lifestyle. Typically characterised by earthy tones with flowing fabrics and flowers. When I design a couture gown, I take inspiration from various other era’s to suite the bride’s wedding look.

Who is your ultimate style icon/muse?
I don’t really have one.

How do you overcome designer’s block?
I book a weekend away. Nothing better than sleeping late and fresh air.

Is there any part of the creative process that you enjoy the most?
I love every aspect of the process. From designing to applying the final touches. My favourite is to work directly with my clients and do the lace applique on the dress.

Any style tips for brides on their big day?
Wedding dresses no longer have to be white. Use your imagination to personalise and individualise your gown.
