Nando’s presents Mass Hysteria and South Africa’s most rowdy parliament members recently took to the Artscape stage to help us laugh at ourselves and our national leaders.

The night began with an introductory video of the real-life shenanigans from our politicians this year. The Economic Freedom Fighters, or EFF, chanting ‘pay back the money’ and the party being forcibly removed from parliament, as well as our dear president’s infamous Nkandla’s firepool. The jog down South Africa’s political memory lane effortlessly blurred the lines between drama, tragedy, silliness and comedy gold.

Some of the best jokers on SA’s comedy scene took to the stage at Artscape to dish out their thoughts. Acting ministers for the night to an absurd selection of portfolios, such as John Vlismas’ Minister of Non-Communicative Diseases, Alan Committie’s Minister for Upgrading, Downsizing, Insighting and Marc Lottering claiming the role of Minister of the Cape, Retail Therapy and Statues. Tumi Morake, Mpho Popps Modikoane, Chester Missing, and Loyiso Gola all brought their crazy portfolios to life too.

No-one held back with their honest opinions on our politicians, their outrageous statements and comical behaviour in parliament, as well as a candid chat about experiences of race and gender. Solutions to take out all the foolish among us were shared, while an irate Chester Missing complained about the laid back attitude in the sleepy Garden Route town of George. Marc Lottering let us know how is new place in Camps Bay has been treating him and Loyiso Gola recalled his time living in Woodstock.

This October, don’t miss out on the chance to find the lighter side of South African politics.
