Although Opulent Living, the luxury magazine that celebrated life’s glamorous pleasures, closed its doors this year, co-founder and co-owner Barbara Lenhard has opened a brand new concept store and gallery of the same name in Kloof Street.
Resembling the high streets of famous European towns, Kloof Street has emerged as one of Cape Town’s most loved design districts, and the exquisite old building housing the store has been given a makeover by interior design guru Sarah Ord. Revered for her dramatic aesthetic, Ord’s designs for the store include walls in eye-catching emerald green, offset in places by deep sapphire blue. The jewel-toned interiors are a nod to the key pillars of the Opulent Living label, namely lifestyle, art and travel.
In addition to paintings and sculptures by both seasoned and rising South African artists, plush, one-of-a-kind lifestyle items are stocked and presented as part of a distinctive shopping experience. Among the coveted items is hand-made jewellery from ANPA – recognised for its tailored, modern designs – and the Legacy Collection, which enlists pieces of the untouched fence from Robben Island prison. Intricately fashioned handbags from upscale ostrich leather house, Mvari, along with vivid creations from the Italian-made Save My Bag series, are also available. These are joined by designer menswear of English fashion house, Grays London, and vibrant womenswear from the Resort range.
Quaint Taunina bears, each crafted by hand and embellished by local women, also dot the store – and are for sale, just in time for Christmas! Other artworks presently on sale include those by leading South African artists such as Jean Doyle, Jimmy Law and Marieke Prinsloo, and German-born wildlife art photographer, Klaus Tiedge.
