There’s no substitute for a good location when you’re deciding on a hotel. The proximity to a city’s favourite spots, uninterrupted views of its natural treasures and the ability to move from one end of town to the other without fuss are all factors that affect your choice.

The Mother City – being a world-class destination – offers spectacular options for activities, sightseeing and eating out, and if any hotel could have the perfect location to allow its patrons to take it all in, then Southern Sun Waterfront can count itself fortunate.

The playwright and critic George Bernard Shaw once said, “The great advantage of a hotel is that it is a refuge from home life”, but Southern Sun Waterfront has embraced the concept of home away from home – starting in the kitchen.

A favourite part of the hotel’s allure is probably one of the best breakfasts in town by a mile. As you drag yourself blurry-eyed towards the breakfast buffet, the smell of fresh pastries and smooth, rich bottomless coffee will put you in the right mood to take on the day. Look out for the Chef’s Special – it’s always a winner and will keep you coming back for more. This time around it was a chili pasta with vegetables, my heart was won over when I read chili. It’s a warm welcome break from the usual bacon, eggs and baked beans routine most of us opt for.

Recently refurbished, the hotel offers 537 Standard and Executive suites, most with breathtaking views of the city and its surrounds. It stands at the heart of the waterfront area, where the buzz of the city is electrifying. The rooms are tastefully kitted out with all the comforts one could hope for – a flat screen TV, minibar and of course the essential wifi. The decor is soft, muted tones of yellows and white – and the bathrooms offers more space than one would expect.

Just a stone’s throw away is the Two Oceans Aquarium and if you cast your eyes in the opposite direction, Table Mountain invites you to pay a visit. If you’re attending an event at the International Convention Centre, the hotel is a two-minute walk away. As is any number of top retail stores, bars and restaurants. But you needn’t go that far for a great meal.

The staff seem to embody the name of the hotel’s amazing, Yizani restaurant, which means “Come in…welcome” in isiXhosa. With a warm smile, they attend to your every need and makes the entire experience pleasant and hassle-free. Yizani specialises in South Africa inspired meals, which makes your stay all the more authentic.

And when you need a to get in a gym session to burn off all those meals, then Southern Sun Waterfront can offer you a state of the art facility to work on that summer body.

The hotel is a home away from home, where you can take in the best of the Mother City with no effort at all. It’s what holidays are meant to be.
