The City of Cape Town is promoting a love of reading this Valentine’s Day by inviting members of the public to visit their nearest library and fall in love with books.

“A number of libraries, including Heideveld and Retreat, are also giving readers the opportunity to have a blind date with a book.”

Retreat Library will be handing out a sweet treat with every checked-out book from its display shelf. Members can select a book covered in wrapping paper and check it out of the library before tearing off the wrapping to reveal its title. The initiative is meant to encourage readers to appreciate and try books of all genres.
The library also has a competition for readers who review the books upon returning them.
The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia Van der Ross, said, “Going on a blind date is like opening a new book. You’re not quite sure who or what to expect, but don’t judge a book by its cover. These two libraries have especially wrapped a number of books on display. It’s not until you’ve checked it out that you can unwrap it to see where your reading adventure will take you or who you’ll meet.”
“Even if it’s not your usual fare, reading across genres will help you appreciate the diversity of literature, widen your reading taste and you’ll learn about a new place or people. You may even find a new love for a different category of books,” adds Councillor Van der Ross in conclusion.
