Cycling is not just a sport or a leisure activity, but also a means of transport, social empowerment and sustainable development. In Cape Town, the Bicycling Empowerment Network (BEN) is at the forefront of promoting cycling for these purposes.
BEN was founded in 2002 with the goal of providing affordable and sustainable transport options for low-income communities in Cape Town.

The organisation does this by refurbishing and selling second-hand bicycles, as well as providing training and support for bicycle mechanics and entrepreneurs in local communities. This approach not only provides access to the affordable transport, but also creates employment and economic opportunities for individuals and communities.

In addition to their focus on transportation, BEN also promotes cycling as a tool for social empowerment and community development. The organisation runs various programmes that provide training and support for young people and women, helping them to develop life skills and employment opportunities through cycling.

One of these programmes is the Bicycle Education Empowerment Program (BEEP), which provides training and education on bicycle maintenance, road safety and entrepreneurship.
BEN’s work has had a significant impact on Cape Town’s cycling culture, with the organisation playing a key role in the development of the City’s bicycle infrastructure and advocacy efforts.
For example, BEN played a key role in the establishment of the Bicycle Mayor programme in Cape Town, which aims to promote cycling as a viable and safe mode of transport.

The organisation has received recognition for its innovative and effective approach to promoting sustainable transportation and community development. BEN was a finalist in the 2015 and 2016 Eco-Logic Awards, and was awarded the 2015 German Environmental Award in recognition of its work.
