Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) has been confirmed on six farms in the Mossel Bay area, with five further farms awaiting test results, officials said.
George Herald reported that veterinarians visited 114 farms in the zone and vaccinated 81 of those holdings, bringing the local total to 13 493 animals vaccinated so far.

Provincial co-ordination by Agri Western Cape and the Red Meat Producers’ Organisation led the latest Joint Operations Centre update on Monday.
Garden Route officials reported that 29 private veterinarians are assisting the campaign and that about 47 700 animals across the province have now received vaccines. The department has received 60 000 doses and expects a further 100 000 to support hotspot areas.
On the West Coast authorities confirmed one positive farm at Kalbaskraal and set up a quarantine ring with nine checkpoints, affected farms there have been vaccinated and movement controls are in place.
‘Ahead of the peak vaccination push, good progress has been made,’ one statement said.
Producers must keep strict biosecurity, manage animal movement and report symptoms immediately, officials added. Cooperation and responsible action remain farmers’ best defence against further spread.
