More than just hula hooping – let go of your frustrations, express yourself and get into the ‘flow’ of hoop dancing with HoopFlowLove.

‘Flow arts’ is a term used to describe a variety of movement-based disciplines including hoop dance, poi, juggling, fire-spinning and more. The feel-good factor combined with the physical activity and challenging movement engages you in such a way that it can have a meditative effect.

Sandra Dee Mitchell and Basil John Scordilis make up the team behind HoopFlowLove. Through sharing their own experiences, knowledge and passion, they aim to showcase the benefits of hoop dance and the natural joy it brings to people of all ages.

Sandra fell in love with the hoop in 2008 after it helped her connect with people in Cape Town after moving from Zimbabwe. She studied Elemental hoop dance teacher training under Shakti Sunfire and has been teaching hoop dance for over five years. Basil recognised how hooping helped him release tension while he was ‘in flow,’ thus, it became his personal meditation and he has been teaching alongside Sandra for over two years.

Hoop dance is more about the ‘flow’, but hula hooping as exercise can have multiple health and fitness benefits, including core strengthening and muscle toning. A study on the energy expenditure of hula hooping as exercise found that it burned around 878 kilojoules in a 30-minute workout or 29 kilojoules per minute. All the more reason to re-connect with your childhood hula hoop.

They supply beginner hoops, which are heavier and more durable, and intermediate hoops that are lightweight and flexible.
