Dine with Khayelitsha brings people from all across the globe together for a meaningful dinner adventure in the township.
The Dine with Khayelitsha project came about after a group of young people wanting to change the world started an NPO called Have Fun.
Have Fun is a primary level educational program which provides kids with early childhood development support that encourages independent leadership. The team experienced difficulty in sourcing funding for the NPO and so they founded Dine with Khayelitsha in March 2015 as a solution. All the funds raised from the dinners go to the Have Fun educational program.
The NPO also connects the Khayelitsha youth with student chefs, local artists and apprentice photographers who all contribute to the dinners. The Dine team ultimately hopes to share the concept in other townships across the country.
The truly South African dining experience, Dine with Khayelitsha has already successfully hosted three events. Through these dinners, people from all over the world can experience IKasi (township) lifestyle mixed with thought provoking conversations entailing social issues, innovation and entrepreneurship.
The dinners have had a profound impact on the community by shattering race boundaries, uniting people and offering a fresh perspective on aspects of township life. Dine with Khayelitsha is changing lives as the entire township is watching and taking note of each Dine experience.
Up to eight different homes, each with space for a maximum of 11 guests host the township dinners. They provide three courses of authentic African cuisine, each course based on topical conversations culminating in brainstorming solutions during the final course. Talented artists entertain guests at a local lounge before the night comes to an end.
The dining sessions promote personal growth while forging friendships, brainstorming ideas, sharing cultures, creating fresh perspectives, filling up on delicious food, making history, and creating great memories.
Parking will be available for anyone using their own vehicle to get to the event. The meeting spot in Khayelitsha’s Site C is at Solomon Tshuku Avenue near Mkhize’s Place. (Mkhize’s Place doesn’t show up on Google maps, but a Dine member will be at Solomon Tshuku to show you where to park.)
