With the weather heating up across the region as we move towards summer, there is no better way to cool off than by taking a dip in one of the numerous tidal pools around Cape Town.

Find respite from the dry summer heat by heading to pools in these five areas.

  1. Camps Bay

This pool hides among a row of boulders on Camps Bay beach and has a breathtaking view of the ocean. The beach is lined with restaurants, cafés and bars, so swimmers have plenty of options if they need a bite to eat after a day in the water.

Address: Victoria Rd, Camps Bay, Cape Town

2. St James

Situated between the seaside towns of Kalk Bay and Muizenberg, the tidal pool on St James beach is popular among the locals, offering a safe space for swimmers. The beach’s iconic multi-coloured changing huts are recognised worldwide and well-worth a visit in themselves.

The beach is ideal for sunbathing after a refreshing swim.

Address: Main Rd, between Muizenberg and Kalk Bay, Cape Town

3. Miller’s Point

Miller’s Point, just further south from Simon’s Town, has a secluded tidal pool close to diving spots and areas great for kayaking. A children’s pool with a small slide dropping down into the main pool makes this a pleasant space for families. There are changing rooms and toilets nearby, as well as picnic and braai spots.

Be aware that crafty baboons sometimes show up in the area. Please remember not to feed or attempt to touch these animals.

Address: Miller’s Point Rd, Murdock Valley, Cape Town

4. Glencairn

The tidal pool in this False Bay suburb was rebuilt to allow more water to enter it. It is a wonderful place to bring the kids to dip in the water and explore the rocky surrounding area.

Address: Main Rd, Glencairn, Cape Town

5. Saunders Rock

Saunders Rock beach in Bantry Bay has the advantage of being close to some of Sea Point’s most popular eateries.

Partly enclosed by giant boulders, the pool here may be small, but is perfect for sharing a dip with friends or family.

Address: Bantry Bay, Cape Town
