Sometimes all we want to do when the weather enters its ‘I’m too cool’ era in Cape Town, is stay indoors. While a day in can sometimes be delicious, the side effects for a Capetonian especially, can certainly include cabin fever.
Luckily for us, indoor activities in the Mother City are not a whisper in the wind of dreams, and the weather dip might be the perfect time for you to veer toward some indoor adventures. Get creative at Clay Cafe and create the mug you’ll drink your next chilly day coffee out of, test your balance at roller-skating or experience Cape Town’s finest curiosities and trinkets at a trendy indoor market. Here are five indoor activities in Cape Town as cool as the weather.
1. Paint the next mug you’ll drink coffee from on another chilly day
Some ‘gloomy’ weather can inspire us to paint our own colours into the day. A perfect spot to do this is at Clay Cafe, which boasts two locations in Bree Street and Hout Bay.
A craft-focused space, Clay Cafe combines the art of treats like tapas and cocktails with ceramic painting experiences. It’s the creative ‘it spot’ to let your inner artist bloom. Don’t fret about making a mess, it’s a part of the fun and you’ll be drenched in expertise from Clay Cafe’s teams to guide you too.
- Locations:
- City venue: 199 Bree Street, Gardens, Cape Town
- Hout Bay: 4080 Main Road. Opposite Bokkemanskloof Estate
2. If the weather’s a rollercoaster, go rollerskating
Maybe you can’t get your exercise fix from the usual jog on the promenade or biking through the city. Time to turn your attention to the 70s favourite way to move – roller-skating!
Rollercade at the Waterfront’s Battery Park is the perfect spot to learn a new groove. Boasting beats, skates, and marshals on standby to help you glide with finesse (and not across the floor on your behind). Rollercade is one of my personal rainy day go-to’s, writes Cape {town} Etc’s Ashleigh Nefdt.
- Location: V&A Waterfront, Alfred St, Victoria & Alfred Waterfront
3. You can still have a golf day, just in the miniature, luminous form!
Instead of rain-checking your golf day desires, downscale them to mini-golf, and add the thrill of a luminous experience. Glowing Rooms SA may just be the perfect fix for a colder day, especially when the wind is not on our side.
With your 3D glasses on, the world will become illuminated thanks to the glow-in-the-dark artistry. It takes mini-golf to the next level of magic, and is a perfect activity to cure any rainy blues with a little creativity and (hopefully) some friendly competition.
Location: 1 Turf Club Dr, Milnerton, Cape Town
4. Venture through the treats of an indoor market
Indoor markets are like Aladdin’s Cave of Wonders, only without the collapsing in on itself part. There are dime a dozen indoor markets in Cape Town just waiting for the curious onlooker to enjoy the creations and foods they boast. For a market that’s open every day of the week, head on to Mojo Market in Sea Point where music, beverages and an array of thrilling dishes await. If you’re looking for a weekend pick-me-up, the Bay Market at Hout Bay can’t wait to see you. It completely spoils its guests with decor, jewellery, curiosities and of course, foodie treats.

5. Let the cold be the perfect excuse to step into the art world
Cape Town and art go hand in hand, and if you haven’t gone exploring into the art world before, this is your sign to do exactly that. Zeitz MOCAA is open six days a week, excluding Mondays, and serves up enough art to completely fill your curiosity. Alternatively, more intimate galleries like 131 A Gallery in Woodstock or Youngblood Africa in town are other fabulous slices of the art pie to sink your teeth into.
Locations:
- Zeitz MOCAA: V&A Waterfront Silo District, S Arm Rd, Waterfront
- 131 A Gallery: Sir Lowry Road
- Youngblood Africa: 70, 72 Bree Street
6. Explore the seascape at The Two Oceans Aquarium
The Two Oceans Aquarium has stood as a local and tourist favourite for the past 26 years, allowing us to explore the seascape’s creatures and wonders up close. Now, before the cynic thinks that this is a typical pick, our favourite aquarium has added some new ways to enjoy its magic. Some of its latest features include behind the scenes tours and penguin meetings!
Is there really a better way to spend a day indoors than to explore an entire world of life beneath the surface?
Location: Dock Road, V&A Waterfront
