Heritage Day in South Africa has become synonymous with national pride, a sense of celebration and with the National Braai Day initiative. On September 24 each year, South Africans across the land are called to unite around the fireplace, ignite the coals and celebrate with a braai – one of the bastions of our local culture.

The Hussar Grill, a restaurant with its own heritage spanning 55 years, flame grills all its meat with pride on this, and every other day. To help its guests to do the same at home, a select number of restaurants are offering a bespoke butchery experience. Perfectly aged steaks are conveniently vacuum-sealed and displayed behind a refrigerated deli counter so that guests can choose and take home their favourite cuts.

All meat at The Hussar Grill is carefully wet-aged for a minimum of 28 days to ensure superbly matured, tender and flavourful steaks. This is part of what makes a meal at the renowned restaurant, which has been satisfying guests since 1964, so superlative. The Hussar Grill’s initial meat quality selection – it is only ever A-Grade sourced from the best farms – combined with its patient ageing process ensures that your braai meat will be of the very best.

“Our guests can be assured of both the outstanding quality of the meat and extended ageing process to ensure tenderness, both of which we take very seriously here, as they are key to the success of our longstanding business! Now our guests can take a little piece of The Hussar Grill home with them, from our bespoke butchery offering,” says Justin Fortune, Chief Operating Officer at The Hussar Grill.

The Hussar Grill restaurants that offer a bespoke butchery counter include Mouille Point, Steenberg, Camps Bay, Paarl, Franschhoek, Worcester and George in the Western Cape, Morningside in Gauteng, Gateway in KwaZulu-Natal and Walmer in the Eastern Cape. Due to the length of time required to complete ageing process, the select cuts of meat available each day does vary. Please contact these restaurants to find out what the deli counter is stocking ahead of time.
