I love food, but my latest foodie obsessions have involved clouds of fluffiness – doughnuts, writes Cape {town} Etc’s Lynn Cupido. Move aside bagels, there’s a new holey grail and it’s deep-fried and covered in sugar.
Whether you prefer your doughnuts sprinkled with cinnamon sugar or smothered in chocolate, I’ve listed a few of my favourite spots to grab and enjoy this delicious dessert, with some being recommended by a few outside parties.
Without further ado, here are five spots to grab a doughnut:
The Dairy Den
When I’m feeling a tad adventurous, I love to mix my two favourite desserts – ice cream and doughnuts, and the Dairy Den in Sea Point is the perfect spot to do just that! While they offer a range of picture-perfect soft serve ice creams, it’s their doughnuts we’re here for.
Choose from a delicious chocolate-covered doughnut to a fluffy cinnamon doughnut covered in snow or sugar – a great way to jolt your body awake.

My Sugar
I don’t mind my doughnuts with a side of chocolate, and My Sugar is the perfect spot to mix things up. Tuck into their range of artisanal chocolates – a chocoholic’s wet dream, before enjoying one of their fluffy and unique doughnuts.
From Creme Brulee inspired deliciousness to a S’mores option – My Sugar will tickle your tastebuds and allow you to embrace your wildest doughnut fantasies.

Jason Bakery
A fan favourite amongst Capetonians, Jason Bakery is a great stop for those looking to treat themselves to a delectable doughnut after an arduous morning hike. It’s a great spot for any time of the day, actually.
Along with a range of glorious doughnut options, they are also popular for their doughssants – a croissant/doughnut hybrid. Make sure you grab a cup of their famous coffee too!

The Donut Centre
‘Local is Lekker‘ and there’s nothing more lekker than the cinnamon doughnuts from The Donut Centre. In a world where we’re having to battle inflation, it feels great to get six doughnuts for R30 (plus two free).
They also offer a range of other goodies, including muffins and pancakes for those moments you’re looking for something a bit different.

Donny’s Bakery
There are some days that call for a no-hassle doughnut. A doughnut that’s simply smothered in coconut flakes and dripping with cream. Any bakery that serves samoosas and mince pies is a winner in my books, and Donny’s Bakery in Diep River does just that.
Koeksisters, jam doughnuts and coconut doughnuts are just a few of the yummy delights on their menu – winning!
