The 5-star Cellars-Hohenort hotel is situated in an area known as ‘Cape Town’s Vineyard’ – the historical Constantia Valley, a short 15-minute drive from Cape Town’s city centre. The Small Luxury Hotels of the World member features 51 elegant guest rooms and suites, and The Conservatory restaurant, which is known for taking diners on an unforgettable culinary journey.
Now, the hotel has announced its gourmet wine dinner calendar for the winter months that will showcase wines from estates in the Constantia region, kicking off on Friday 27 May with Buitenverwachting.
Food and wine enthusiasts will have the opportunity to enjoy a menu created by Executive Chef Tronette Dippenaar, paired by Sommelier Marlvin Gwese with the award-winning wines of Buitenverwachting, and presented in person at the dinner in the Conservatory restaurant by winemaker Brad Paton.
Buitenverwachting wines are an expression of Constantia’s slow ripening climatic conditions with cold nights and modest day time temperatures, which translate into fresh, crisp and full-bodied wines that ripen out all the under ripe green flavours. Known for their Sauvignon Blancs in particular, these spectacular wines develop unique ‘yellow’ fruit flavours, such as melons, passion fruit, yellow apple and gooseberries.
On 1 July, the focus will turn to Beau Constantia, where viticulturist and winemaker Megan van der Merwe does her magic in the vineyard and cellar. Situated at the top of Constantia Nek, the vines of Beau Constantia are planted on some of the steepest agricultural slopes in the Cape, producing cultivars that include Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Shiraz and Petit Verdot.
On 26 August, it’s a wrap of the series with another Women and Wine event, showcasing the talents of winemaker Elunda Basson who teams up with Chef Tronette Dippenaar to highlight the wines of Steenberg. These include some of the finest Sauvignon Blanc produced in South Africa, along with several other celebrated varietals to delight gourmands with a perfect pairing of food and wine.
The fine dining Food and Wine Pairing Dinners include a welcome drink with canapés, and a 4-course menu with wines, at R595 per person. Bookings are essential. Tel 021 794 2137 or [email protected]. Guests wanting to stay over after the dinner will be offered a discounted package rate of R4800 per room (for 2 people sharing), including the Food and Wine Pairing Dinner, accommodation and mini-bar included, with full breakfast.
