Two of my biggest vices in life is cake and unadulterated views, and boy, was I treated to both these delights when I stayed at Sky Villa Boutique Hotel, writes Cape {town} Etc’s Lynn Cupido. Perched on a hilltop and nestled in Barons View Estate in Plettenberg Bay, Sky Villa, which forms part of Cape Summer Villas, offers dreamy views of the Keurbooms River, Indian Ocean and Tsitsikamma and Langkloof Mountains.
I spent a good amount of time drinking in the 360-degree panoramic views before snapping a ridiculous amount of pictures to send to my friends and family, with bragging being the main objective behind the snapshots. Along with incredible views, the property boasts a contemporary design that made me feel like a debutante ready to make her grand entrance descending the rather opulent staircase available in the hotel’s entryway.
The property comprises 14 luxury rooms which each offers its own terrace and view. However, I was upgraded from debutante to princess when I managed to snag the luxurious honeymoon suite.
Living a suite life
Views – that was the first thing that I noticed when I stepped into the room. The suite offers a spacious terrace that overlooks the hotel’s swimming pool with incredible views of rolling hills and the ocean in the distance. The second thing I noticed was the fireplace, an exciting addition since it was the tail-end of winter and freezing when the sun dipped behind the horizon. A few delicious slices of red velvet and carrot cake (two of my favourite flavours, btw) was the third thing that I noticed while exploring this spacious suite. Needless to say, my stay at Sky Villa got off to an incredible start.
The room’s decor provided a touch of seaside elegance, with various hues of blue included in the design of the suite. Luxury amenities and world-class appliances are also featured, and I found myself whipping up an espresso despite not even drinking coffee. There was literally no reason to leave this comfortable haven other than when I ventured out in search of food and a few “adult” beverages.
A juicy menu
Perhaps my third vice has to be food. Good food is not always easy to come by, especially when looking for a restaurant that focuses on creating dishes centred on quality and seasonal ingredients. Beef burgers are always my go-to when trying out a new restaurant, and when I heard that Sky Villa’s restaurant offers one of the best burgers in Plett, you bet your bottom dollar I was going to give it a try.
I was not disappointed. Gorgeous oceans views and a juicy burger, I must have been the happiest foodie in Plett that night. Burgers aren’t the only thing on the menu. They offer seasonal menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with a little something for everyone. They also have some incredibly fresh seafood options that will stay in your food fantasies for days. Utilising fresh ingredients is the key to their mouth-watering menu, with hotel-grown herbs and vegetables all included in their dishes.
If you’re spending the day in Plettenberg Bay or just passing through and looking for something scrumptious to dig your teeth in, Sky Villa’s restaurant should be your top choice.
A hotel of dreams
I’ve always found that staying at hotels felt quite cold and impersonal, which is probably one of the many reasons people prefer to grab an Airbnb. But, friendly service from waitrons and hotel staff that were happy to go above and beyond, coupled with an atmosphere that’s both luxurious and comfortable, left me feeling way too comfortable as I sipped on my strawberry daiquiri alongside the sprawling swimming pool.
The overall design of the hotel is incredible in itself, with each corner so beautifully decorated that you can’t help but stop and stare. I found myself mesmerised by the fynbos design on the walls, a deliberate choice, I assume since the hotel’s garden and surroundings include an array of fynbos species.
There was too much to explore. The hotel includes a fully equipped gym, Sky/Zen pool with jets, bar, fully stocked wine cellar and a snooker room – you won’t catch me suffering from boredom anytime soon.
The Sky Bar has to be cherry on top, offering amazing views of Plettenberg Bay and the perfect spot to chill out and mingle with other hotel guests. It also offers a little swimming pool for those blistering summer nights you’re looking to cool down with a drink or two. However, this is operational during select periods, so ensure you ask one of the friendly staff members.
Luxury, good food, cake, and turquoise sea views ensured that I left Sky Villa content and a little sad to say goodbye. The best part? Being transported in luxury by the Ford Tourneo – a great companion for any road trip.
Whether you’re staying for a weekend getaway or a longer staycation, Sky Villa Boutique Hotel will leave you feeling rejuvenated and ready to take on life below the clouds.
