Hidden behind a neatly trimmed hedge in Claremont is one of the most incredible eateries around; Starlings Café, writes Cape {town} Etc’s James Redman. You could easily drive by without knowing a thing, but those that have experienced the magic that awaits beyond the leaves will surely agree that this is one of the best cafés in Cape Town.

Walkthrough the thoroughfare that’s cut into the hedge and you’ll find yourself on the veranda of an old suburban house that’s been transformed into a bustling café. The cosy interior looks and feels like home, with wooden floors and comfortable cushioned chairs. There’s super cool art all over the show, and a wall dedicated to different hanging teacups.

Venture a little further and you’ll find yourself in the charming courtyard. The first time I visited Starlings, I felt much the same way that the character of Lucy Pevensie must have felt when she discovered Narnia hidden behind the cupboard. The Garden is robed in greenery, hidden from neighbourly sight by the tree’s leafy branches. Adding to the fairytale allure is an apple tree in the heart of it all.

Birds chirp pleasantly amidst the mingling chatter of customers, and yes, you’ll spot a real starling or two. Sometimes, when sitting at one of the garden tables, I forget that I’m at a café at all. The feeling is akin to being in a forest, as the floor is made up of soft bark creating an earthy feel and aroma.

Starlings Café serves breakfasts and lunches and some of the best coffee I’ve had in Cape Town. Their iced coffee is a particular attraction, made with condensed milk and served on the rocks.
I simply can’t get enough of the chicken liver breakfast with poached eggs and sourdough. It’s everything I want in a breakfast; rich, creamy, spicy, delicious. The all-day breakfast wrap with scrambled eggs and chorizo is pretty fantastic too!

The curried mince on toast is served with a tomato-ginger-chutney sauce that should be bottled and sold. It’s that good. Salmon scramble, bacon and banana pancakes and decadent french toast are also crowd favourites.
One thing is for sure: Starlings has mastered the art of cooking bacon.

Lunch is equally as delicious. The aubergine melanzane is an absolute delight. There are lots of vegan and vegetarian options, too.

Starlings are renowned for its cheesecake, served with fresh cream and berry compote.

For a place so well hidden, it’s always packed. But, whether you’re sitting in the serenity of the garden or in the mix of the kitchen bustle at a shared table, Starlings is always a delicious experience.
