Residents of drought-stricken Cape Town rejoiced at the loud bangs of thunder this evening and danced in rain, grateful for every drop that fell.

Cape Town is the first city in the world that will run out of drinkable water if winter rains don’t fall in the next few months. Level 6B water restrictions are in full effect, with households being limited to 50 litres of water per person, per day.

As lightning filled up the sky today, Capetonians moved thirsty plants, containers and buckets outside to catch the water falling from the sky.
